Vines are extremely hardy plants, and over the centuries viticulturalists have developed a myriad of varieties to cope with even the most inhospitable of terrains.
In England, we are blessed with fertile soils and a mild temperate maritime climate. The challenge here has been to match the right rootstocks and varietals to the different soils, climate and aspects that we enjoy in the south east of England. We now have the knowledge, experience, pedigree and resources to do this with confidence.
Our conclusion and conviction is very clear. The North Downs of Kent and large areas of the South Downs of Sussex along with the chalk downlands of Hampshire have some of the finest potential terroirs for grape growing, to make World Class sparkling wine in the traditional method - similar to Champagne, and cool climate aromatic and complex still wines similar to those produced in Alsace, Sancerre and New Zealand. There are also areas away from the Chalk and Greensand areas which can also produce distinctive, minerally, aromatic clean fruit such as Essex and The Weald.
Our grapes are sourced from across the region and matching the vineyard with the right varieties on the right rootstock has been our route to better fruit and growth.
One day, we are certain, the South East of England will be mentioned in the same breath as Stellenbosch, Sonoma, Burgundy and Champagne. Our wines are developing exponentially and we are looking to plant more acreage. World beating wines produced from revitalised and vibrant rural communities in Kent and Sussex - isn't that worth drinking to?
Our journey towards a more exciting future progresses with every bottle of Chapel Down you buy as we continue to invest in our winery, vineyards and our people and to work with long-term partners to plant more vines and improve fruit quality and yields.
